CINDERELLA'S BALL GOWN

sumber : entertainment.analisadaily.com

Daily Mail has an interview with Sandy Powell, the creator of Lily James's ridiculously gorgeous Cinderella ball gown. She revealed some of the secrets behind the iconic dress and they're fascinating:

1. There are eight versions of the gown, and they're all different. "One was 2 inches shorter and a couple were 4 inches for the times when Lily had to run; another had holes cut in the sides of the skirt for harness work." It took 4,000 hours to make all eight versions.

2. Director Kenneth Branagh said Lily ate soup in the dress so she didn't go daft. I believe that's English for "going slightly insane from lack of food"?

3. Lily James said she wasn't photoshopped and that she was squeezed in within an inch of her life. She added that the bigness of the skirt made her waist appear smaller.

4. Helena Bonham-Carter, who played Cinderella's fairy godmother, gave Lily advice on getting into the dress, telling her to breathe out when she's putting it on so her waist would be as tiny as possible.

5. The top layer of the gown is silk crepeline, a very lightweight, fine silk. The layers underneath are made up of a synthetic called yumissima, an incredibly light (and very expensive!) material which floats that thrown in the air.

6. If Lily had to go to the bathroom with the dress on, they gave her a mini camping portable potty to slip under her dress! (Talk about roughing it.)

7. The designers aren't allowed to say how much it cost to make the dresses but estimates put them at about $12,000 each.

8. The corset and the crinoline (skirt cage) are made out of steel.

9. The trickiest thing Lily had to do in the dress was dance with the prince; he kept tripping on it! (Which, duh.)

10. There are three miles of thread in the hems and 250 meters of fabric in each dress.

11. It took Lily 20 minutes to get the dress on! Which is surprisingly less time than I would've imagined considering everything involved.

ABOUT CINDERELLA

Cinderella is 19 years old with medium-length strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. After her father dies, she is forced into servitude in her own home and is constantly tormented by her evil stepmother, Lady Tremaine, and two stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. Despite this, she maintains hope through her dreams and remains a kind, gentle and sweet person. She has faith that someday her dreams of happiness will come true and her kindness will be repaid. Cinderella is shown to have a down-to-earth attitude, but she is also a daydreamer. For example, in "Sing Sweet Nightingale", she becomes distracted with the bubbles, allowing Lucifer to smudge the floor she was cleaning. Also, after hearing that the Grand Duke is traveling the kingdom with the missing slipper, she dreamily dances back to the attic humming the song she heard at the ball. She is also shown to have a sarcastic side and a sharp wit.
With the help of her animal friends, she fixes up an old dress of her mother's so she can attend a royal ball. However, when her evil stepsisters brutally tear the dress apart, she is heartbroken and fears that her dreams will never come true.
However, her Fairy Godmother appears, restoring Cinderella's hope by transforming her torn homemade gown into her now-iconic ball gown with a glittering puffed overskirt, a delicate laced white petticoat, and puffy sleeves. Although colored silver in the original animated film, since the 1980s it has been colored powder blue. She wears her hair in a French twist supported by a powder blue headband with diamond earrings at the tips, and her accessories include powder blue opera gloves, a black choker, and glass slippers. Her look was probably inspired by 1950s French haute couture, while her torn dress is clearly inspired by Salvador Dalì and Elsa Schiaparelli's Tear dress.
As a servant, she wears her hair down in a ponytail, held in place with a blue ribbon, sometimes supported by a white scarf and wears a brown dress with a powder blue blouse, a white apron, and black flats.

1. Cinderella (1950)

Cinderella is a 1950 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney and originally released by RKO Radio Pictures. Based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault, it is the twelfth Disney animated feature film. Directing credits go to Clyde GeronimiHamilton Luske, and Wilfred Jackson. Songs were written by Mack DavidJerry Livingston, and Al Hoffman. Songs in the film include "Cinderella", "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", "Sing Sweet Nightingale", "The Work Song", "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo", and "So This is Love". It features the voices of Ilene WoodsEleanor AudleyVerna FeltonRhoda WilliamsJames MacDonaldLuis van RootenDon BarclayMike Douglas, and Lucille Bliss.
At the time, Walt Disney Productions had suffered from losing connections to the European film markets due to the outbreak of World War II, enduring some box office bombs like PinocchioFantasia, and Bambi, all of which would later become more successful with several re-releases in theaters and on home video. At the time, however, the studio was over $4 million in debt and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Walt Disney and his animators turned back to feature film production in 1948 after producing a string of package films with the idea of adapting Charles Perrault's Cendrillon into a motion picture. It is the first Disney film in which all of Disney's Nine Old Men worked together as directing animators. After two years in production, Cinderella was finally released on February 15, 1950. It became the greatest critical and commercial hit for the studio since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and helped reverse the studio's fortunes. It is considered one of the best American animated films ever made, as selected by the American Film Institute. It received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Music, Original Song for "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo". Decades later, it was followed by two direct-to-video sequels—Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Timeand a 2015 live-action remake directed by Kenneth Branagh.

2. Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002)

Cinderella II: Dreams Come True is the first direct-to-video sequel to the 1950 Disney film Cinderella. It was made in 2001 and released on February 26, 2002. It was followed by Cinderella III: A Twist in Time in 2007. It consists of three segments featuring Cinderella planning a party, one of the mice, Jaq turned into a human, and one of Cinderella's brutal stepsisters (Anastasia, the redheaded one in a pink dress) reaching her redemption through falling in love with a young baker, a low-class man of whom Lady Tremaine and Drizella do not approve. Estimated to cost $5,000,000 to produce, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True was Walt Disney Pictures' top selling animated sequel that year, grossing approximately $120,000,000 in direct-to-video sales, but the film itself was met with a mainly negative response from fans and critics alike.

3. Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007)

Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (released in UK as simply Cinderella: A Twist in Time) is the second direct-to-video sequel to the 1950 Walt Disney Pictures animated classic CinderellaCanonically it is a continuation of the original Cinderella, rather than Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, though due to its unusual chronological sequencing it acknowledges the events of Cinderella II: Dreams Come True by using some of its characters. The film was released on February 6, 2007 and was directed by Frank Nissen and features the voices of Jennifer Hale and Susanne Blakeslee. It made its world television premiere on Toon Disney on December 3, 2007.

Once upon a  time, there lived an unhappy young girl with her stepmother and two step sisters who didn't like her. All the nice things, kind thought and loving touches were for her own daughters. But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. For she had to work hard all day, and only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That is how she got her nickname, for everybody called her Cinderella.

It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in rags with a dusty gray face from the cinders, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy, and ugly.

One day, a ball was to be held by the royal family of the kingdom to find the prince's spouse. Cinderella's stepsisters ordered beautiful new dress for the ball. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball but her stepmother asked her to stay at home.

"You? My dear girl, you're staying at home to wash the dishes, scrub the floor and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and very sleepy." asked her stepmother.

Cinderella only nodded her head and began to work. Suddenly something amazing happened. In the kitchen, where Cinderella was sitting all by herself, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared.

"Don't be afraid Cinderella, I know what you feel, my dear. Do you want to go to ball?" asked the fairy.

"Yes, I do. But look! How can I go to the ball with this dress? Cinderella replied.

Then the fairy turned Cinderella's dress became the most beautiful dress and with beautiful slippers, the loveliest ever seen in the realm. The fairy also turned a pumpkin into a parking coach and turned the mice become six white horses.

"Now, you can go to the Court and go to the ball. But remember my dear Cinderella, you must leave the ball at midnight and come home. For that is when the spell ends. Your coach will turn back into a pumpkin, the horses will become mice and you will be dressed again in rags with clogs.

At the ballroom, Cinderella amazed everybody there include the prince. When the prince set eyes on Cinderella, he was stuck by her beauty. Walking over to her, he bowed deeply and asked her to dance. Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball. But, all of a sudden, she heard the sound of a clock, the first stroke of midnight.

Remembered what the fairy had said, Cinderella ran back to the coach and went home. But he lost one of her slippers in ballroom. The prince who was now madly in love with her, picked up her slipper and would search for the girl whose foot fitted with the slipper.

In the next morning, the prince began to search everywhere in the kingdom but no girl whose foot fitted with the slipper. Until he found Cinderella house and asked Cinderella's stepsisters to wear the slipper. But none fitted with the slipper. The prince began hopeless.

"Is there any girl else here" asked the prince.

"Yes, there are. But she is very ugly and I think she is not the girl that you are looking for." replied Cinderella's stepmother.

"Call her here!" asked the prince.

Then Cinderella's stepmother called Cinderella to come out who was dressed in rags and wore clogs like usual. The prince began to wear the slipper into Cinderella foot, and it was fit. The prince believed that Cinderella was the girl he met in the ball. Then the prince asked Cinderella to marry him. And at the end, Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after in the kingdom.
